Summary

During my term 2 at Vancouver Film School. I was assigned to design a completely new map for Counter strike 2 in Unreal Engine 5. Through this assignment, I am trying to show my thought process of designing a level.

2D Layout and Blocking out

In Term 2 at Vancouver Film School , I focused on designing a balanced 2D layout for a Counter-Strike 2 map. My primary goal was to ensure that both teams have an equal travel time to reach each bomb site, promoting fair gameplay. To achieve this, I conducted extensive research on existing CS2 maps, analyzing their layouts, flow, and strategies. This informed my design choices, resulting in a map that encourages strategic play while maintaining balance and accessibility for both teams. The project highlights my ability to combine research with practical design, aiming for an engaging and competitive gaming experience.

2D Layout Map

In Counter-Strike 2 (CS2), the gameplay revolves around two teams: Terrorists (T) and Counter-Terrorists (CT). The objective is for the Terrorists to plant a bomb at one of the designated bomb sitesA or B while the Counter-Terrorists aim to prevent this or defuse the bomb if it’s planted.

A Site

A Site

Bomb Site A features an open layout with multiple entry points, which encourages players to engage in dynamic and varied gameplay. The open space allows Terrorists to approach from different angles, making it crucial for them to communicate and coordinate their strategies effectively. Surrounding the site are plenty of cover options, such as walls and objects, which allow counter terrorists to hide and set up amazing maneuvers.

B Site

On this site, I wanted to have multiple entry points for Terrorist to plant the bomb and I have placed hard covers for counter Terrorist team to defend the bomb site. This site includes narrow corridors and choke points, creating challenges for terrorists as they attempt to breach the site. The tight spaces allow counter terrorists to maintain string positions, making teamwork essential for the attacking side. Terrorists must use clever strategies to clear out defenders while navigating the confined environment, encouraging fast-paced action and quick decision-making.

In the midsection of my level design, I implemented multiple pathways for the Terrorist team to approach Bomb Site A and B. These varied routes encourage strategic gameplay and offer players the flexibility to adapt their tactics based on the situation. By incorporating a mix of direct paths and alternative routes, I aimed to create opportunities for both stealthy and aggressive maneuvers. Players can choose to navigate through tighter corridors for a stealthy approach or utilize wider areas for a more aggressive push, keeping defenders on their toes. This design not only enhances the excitement of the gameplay but also emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication, as players must coordinate their movements to effectively breach the bomb site.

Learning Experience

The dual bomb site structure promotes strategic diversity, requiring players to adapt their tactics based on the site being targeted. Effective communication and teamwork are essential for both teams to succeed, making the gameplay dynamic and engaging.

Learning Experience

Working on the design of Bomb Sites A and B in Unreal Engine 5 was a valuable learning experience that deepened my understanding of level design and game mechanics. Here are some key takeaways from the project:

  1. Balancing Gameplay: One of the most important lessons was the need for balance between the two bomb sites. I learned how to create environments that offer equal opportunities for both teams, ensuring fair competition. This involved careful consideration of entry points, cover, and sightlines to maintain a balanced gameplay experience.

  2. Understanding Player Dynamics: Throughout the design process, I gained insights into player behavior and how different layouts influence strategies. Observing how players interact with the environment helped me understand the importance of creating spaces that encourage teamwork, communication, and tactical decision-making.

  3. Iterative Design Process: I experienced firsthand the value of iteration in design. Initial concepts often required multiple revisions based on playtesting feedback. This taught me to be flexible and open to change, emphasizing the importance of refining ideas to enhance gameplay.

  4. Environmental Storytelling: Designing the bomb sites allowed me to explore how environmental elements can convey narrative and enhance immersion. I learned to incorporate visual cues and thematic details that enrich the player's experience, making the game world feel more engaging and alive.

Overall, this project was an enriching journey that enhanced my skills in level design, deepened my understanding of player dynamics, and strengthened my technical abilities in Unreal Engine 5. I'm excited to apply these insights to future projects and continue growing as a game designer.
